Portland Timbers have completed the signing of former Portsmouth and West Ham striker Frédéric Piquionne. The Frenchman had been on trial in Portland for a week and featured in the club’s final two pre-season matches, including 76 minutes in last Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Dallas. The 34-year-old failed to score in either outing, but in the wake of Bright Dike’s injury, and the lackluster performance and eventual trade of Danny Mwanga, Caleb Porter was in need of reinforcements on the front line and he apparently saw enough to warrant signing the striker. With First Kick just three days away, it would seem unlikely that Piquionne would factor into the club’s opening day plans.
