Gavin Wilkinson Looks Ahead to Colorado Rapids
September 3rd, 2012 by Michael Orr
“It’s a challenge, isn’t it? [road games] Colorado is a very difficult place to play at altitude. For them, just coming off a lost, they probably felt they deserved more just off of the second half, looking at their clear cut opportunities. We should’ve buried the game at half-time but for them, they probably feel a little bit hard done by it. For us it’s going to be very, very important to come out of the gate, as we did against New York, and try to dominate the game and then go with momentum. It’s important that we don’t sit back, that we don’t camp in our half, as such. We have to look to see if we can control the ball and play the same way on the road as we do at home.”
“We bring it [struggling on the road] up constantly, just to see how mentally tough we are. I’ve said it a lot, and too many times, but we’re trying to tick a lot of boxes. For the group, I see it as another challenge. I see it as an opportunity to put these things behind us, to go on the road and get a good result. If I was an opponent right now, looking at us, you’d have to question the mentality of the group. Is that fair question? And is it true? For us, it’s important that we go out there, win our individual battles, we work hard, we play for 90 minutes and we see if we can get a result.”
“I think the first fifteen minutes will dictate how the game will go. I think it’s very, very important that we come out and we look to dominate the game, create a little bit of rhythm and keep the ball. I think we’re a better team when we keep the ball and keep the ball moving. We’re not a good team when we just defend. I think the second half against Colorado, we didn’t really put our foot on the ball. We didn’t really get our midfielders as involved as what I would like. Again, that was another little bit of a learning curve for us. It’s happened when we’ve gone a goal up. For us, it’s very, very important that we go into this game very, very positive and look to see if we can keep the ball and develop rhythm. But the first fifteen minutes are essential for us.”
“It’s fantastic [to have a set starting XI]. They’ve earned it, as well. I think we’ve had some very solid performances, I think consistent performances, and they deserve it. I think Eric Alexander is the one that would feel a little bit hard done by, but he is still going to feature for us a lot in many, many different ways. As long as we keep them engaged, we’ll be fine.”
“I’m very happy [with Sal Zizzo and Bright Dike]. I’d love to play with two up top and see if we can cause more problems just with the balance in the middle of the park and our personalities, trying to get more out of the players. We’re playing with Bright up top by himself, but Sal’s getting forward a lot, Franck Songo’o's getting forward and then [Darlington] Nagbe could’ve had a good goal just before half-time. But I’m delighted to see Sal Zizzo combining with Bright Dike. I think Bright deserves a lot of credit. He’s put in a lot of work at the moment. Playing as a lone forward in a 4-3-3 is tough work and he’s doing a great job.”
“I think [Hanyer] Mosquera and David Horst, Steven Smith and Kos[uke Kimura] all had very, very good games. I think our team shape was very good. They had one very, very good chance with a ball into [Omar] Cummings that we should’ve done a little bit better with. But apart from that, they didn’t create a lot of open opportunities. We had a couple – [Matt] Pickens pulled off a great save from Jack Jewsbury. Darlington Nagbe could’e had one and we had a few other ones – Bright Dike through one-on-one and sprayed it wide. I think we’re playing the way I want to play and mentality is there, the organization is there. We still need to create more opportunities, though.”
“I think any defender that is playing against Dike is going to be hurting at the end of the game. He challenges for anything – for everything. He’s honest in the way that he plays, he runs things down, he holds the ball up for us. He’s just an honest player. With Dike, any defender that’s going to play against him twice in a limited timespan is not going to look forward to it because you know he’s honest, you know he’s going to run and you know he’s going to challenge for everything. I’m sure their defenders are hurting after the game.”
“Honestly, it’s more when we answer questions in the media [when the team is most tired of talking about losing on the road]. It’s a weakness. At the moment you would say it’s not down to their ability, it’s down to the mentality. Mentally we’ve got to be a stronger team. I think we’re starting to cure some of those things. We’ve got into Toronto 2-2, we scored two goals in New York. Now we have the belief that we will score on the road. We need to continue to score to put teams under pressure. Prior to that, it was how are we going to win this game when we’re not scoring? Now we’re scoring on the road. We just got a clean sheet. There’s a lot of positives to take into this game. If we can overcome the altitude and the mental side of it, I think we’re in for our first win.”
“With the way the second half went, if we had dominated the second half and created numerous opportunities, I think you would question complacency. You could question the mentality going into the game. I think Colorado kept us on our toes, they kept us honest and it’s important that we go into the game remembering what happened in the later stages of the second half and work on that. That could be similar to the way the game goes in Colorado if we do not take care of the ball, if we sit as deep as we did. We’ve got to look to play a bit higher. They don’t have a lot of pace up to to beat us in behind. With Cummings being gone with national team duty, we’re hoping to play the game a little bit higher. We’re looking to keep possession in the middle of the park but I don’t think complacency will be an issue based on the pressure they put us under in the second half.”
“With them trying to contain Darlington, they play with two holding midfielders and an attacking midfielder. Darlington didn’t find a lot of space. Colorado is a lot, lot bigger. We have a lot more pace than they do. If you’re going into it the way both coaches would be looking at it, we’ve got a lot of pace on our team that needs to be taken care of. We don’t mind isolating players one-on-one. I’m sure they don’t like that. With Darlington on a field the size of Colorado’s, if mentally we’re up for it and he’s having a good game, he’ll expose the amount of space and I’m sure he’ll start to get more time on the ball. They did a decent job, they nullified him. But we still won and we found space elsewhere. Even with Darlington, he had a fantastic run and it was a great ball from Franck Songo’o. It could’ve been 2-0 at half-time.”
